The Seed and the Law of Sowing and Reaping

2 Corinthians 9:6-8 AMP

6 Now [remember] this: he who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows [a]generously [that blessings may come to others] will also reap [b]generously [and be blessed]. 7 Let each one give [thoughtfully and with purpose] just as he has decided in his heart, not grudgingly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver [and delights in the one whose heart is in his gift]. 8 And God is able to make all grace [every favor and earthly blessing] come in abundance to you, so that you may always [under all circumstances, regardless of the need] have complete sufficiency in everything [being completely self-sufficient in Him], and have an abundance for every good work and act of charity.

When it comes to the seed, it is not always about the amount that you sow but more so about how much seed you have in the ground.  I want to give you this example so that you can better understand this passage concerning sowing generously or sparingly. Let’s say that you have one man who sows a $1.00 seed every single day of the year and another man that sows a onetime seed of $500. That man who sold a seed of $1.00 every day throughout the entire year has more seed in the ground than the man who sowed that one-time seed of $500. Now this is not to say that the Lord will not lead us to sow a large seed. However, I felt it to be important for you to have an understanding about sowing so that you are not manipulated or fearful concerning it.

God can do a lot with a little

John 6:1-11 AMP

6 After this, Jesus went to the other side of the Sea of Galilee (or [a]Sea of Tiberias). 2 A large crowd was following Him because they had seen the signs (attesting miracles) which He continually performed on those who were sick. 3 And Jesus went up on the mountainside and sat down there with His disciples. 4 Now the Passover, the feast of the Jews, was approaching. 5 Jesus looked up and saw that a large crowd was coming toward Him, and He said to Philip, “Where will we buy bread for these people to eat?” 6 But He said this to test Philip, because He knew what He was about to do. 7 Philip answered, “Two hundred denarii (200 days’ wages) worth of bread is not enough for each one to receive even a little.” 8 One of His disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said to Him, 9 “There is a little boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish; but what are these for so many people?” 10 Jesus said, “Have the people sit down [to eat].” Now [the ground] there was [covered with] an abundance of grass, so the men sat down, about [b]5,000 in number. 11 Then Jesus took the loaves, and when He had given thanks, He distributed them to those who were seated; the same also with the fish, as much as they wanted.

For something to multiply, there must be a seed planted. God can do a lot with a little, but we must be able to trust Him at His word with what we have. Sometimes we believe maybe what we have isn’t enough to sow when God is saying, “bring it and let me multiply it.” Then some may try to hold onto what God wants to multiply because they are afraid that they may go lacking. What I do know to be true is when we open our hands, God will open His.

The Overflow

Lastly, I want to shed some light on this thing called “overflow” that many people declare. It sounds good but always remember that when God gives us more than enough, it is not just for us but also so that we can bless others. But we also need to be able to discern when He has given us seed to sow or bread to eat for ourselves. However, in all that we do, it is to glorify God.

2 Corinthians 9:7-9 CEV

Each of you must make up your own mind about how much to give. But don't feel sorry that you must give and don't feel you are forced to give. God loves people who love to give. 8 God can bless you with everything you need, and you will always have more than enough to do all kinds of good things for others. 9  The Scriptures say, “God freely gives his gifts to the poor, and always does right.”

2 Corinthians 9:10-11 AMP

Now He who provides seed for the sower and bread for food will provide and multiply your seed for sowing [that is, your resources] and increase the harvest of your righteousness [which shows itself in active goodness, kindness, and love]. 11 You will be enriched in every way so that you may be generous, and this [generosity, administered] through us is producing thanksgiving to God [from those who benefit].
