Day 36 of 40 Days of Glory and Fasting is complete! | THE THEME: "Don't forget what I said!" - God

The Weight of the Wait

The word deferred means "to put off" or "to drag out." It describes the exhausting space between a promise received and a promise fulfilled. Whether you are waiting for a loved one’s healing, a breakthrough in your career, or an answer to a years-long prayer, the delay can feel like a "lingering sickness" of the soul. There is a different type of ache that comes from delayed promises. It’s not the absence of hope that wounds the heart; it’s hope that keeps believing while time stretches longer than expected. Deferred hope doesn’t usually break us all at once; it wears us down quietly through unanswered prayers, postponed breakthroughs, and “almosts” that never fully arrive.

But Scripture doesn’t say deferred hope kills the heart, it says it makes it sick. And sickness, unlike death, can be healed. This "heart sickness" is not a lack of faith; it is our human response to the tension of longing for breakthrough! When your expectations are repeatedly postponed, your heart can become weary, cynical, or even vulnerable to spiritual attack.

God is not indifferent to the weight of waiting. Delay is not denial, and postponement is not abandonment. Often, what feels like God withholding is actually God preparing, aligning timing, shaping character, and deepening roots so the blessing won’t crush what it’s meant to sustain. Hope deferred reveals where we place our trust. Is it in the outcome, or in the One who promised? The word "hate" is a

very strong word to use but this is why I hate the

cliche "trust the process!" When you do this, you open yourself up to deferred hope because trusting the process causes you to put your trust in what you see instead of putting your trust in the One who gave you the promise! We are not to trust the process, we are to trust God during the process, regardless of what it looks like or feels like! In the waiting, God invites us to anchor our hope not in timelines, but in His faithfulness. The same God who planted the desire is the God who guards it until the season is right.

Perspective in the Silence

In the Bible, many great faiths were tried in the furnace of "hope deferred:"

  • Abraham and Sarah waited decades for the child God promised.

  • Hannah endured years of barrenness before her prayer was answered.

  • Joseph languished in prison while his dreams seemed to be in ruins.

If you feel discouraged today, remember that delay is not denial. God is often "tending the tree" in the background, working out details that require time to mature. Sometimes, He uses the wait to build your character, purify your motives, or prepare you for a "larger assignment" that an immediate answer would have bypassed.

Refocusing Your Hope

When the wait feels unbearable, try these steps to "anchor your soul":

  • Acknowledge the Pain: God is not put off by your frustration. Be honest with Him about how heavy the wait feels.

  • Look to the True Source: We often place our hope in a specific outcome. Instead, shift your hope to the God of Hope himself (Romans 15:13.) Even if circumstances don't change, He remains immovable.

  • Recognize the Lies: The enemy often uses delay to whisper that God has forgotten you. Counter these lies with the truth: "He will never leave you or forsake you" (Deuteronomy 31:8.)

  • Count Past Faithfulness: Look back at your "old prayer journals". Recounting how God provided in the past builds the stamina you need for the present.

And when fulfillment comes, when the longing is finally answered, it doesn’t just satisfy the heart, it becomes a tree of life. What once caused pain becomes provision. What once felt delayed becomes nourishment, not just for you, but for others who will eat from the fruit of your endurance.

If your heart feels weary today, take courage. God heals sick hearts. He restores deferred hope. And He never wastes a season of waiting.
